FAREWELL
MILOSLAV
1922-1997
(Canadian
Scene) Captain Milo-Miloslav Zlamal Czech freedom partisan captain,
journalist, businessman, television producer, novelist and poet
died April 12th in Toronto. A writer in Czech, Slovak and English
, Zlamal was a well-known figure in ethnic journalistic circles
having published and edited both newspapers and literary reviews
and having many of his works translated in many languages.
A
native of Skalica in Slovakia, Zlamal graduated from the university
of Bratislava in philosophy and literature and the State Conservatory
in dramatic arts. Imprisoned by the Nazis during the Second World
War, he escaped and fought with the partisans, an experience which
led to his novel in English The Partisan Captain published
in 1970. He immigrated to Canada and worked as a farm hand, factory
laborer, cement finisher, mine prospector, real estate investor
and television producer. He retired from business at 47 and devoted
his time to literary and humanitarian pursuits. Zlamal distinguished
himself as a director at large of the Czechoslovak Society of Arts
and Sciences in America and as a vice president of the United Nations
Association in Toronto. He was several times chairman of the United
Nations Day celebrations in Toronto and Mayor of the Prague Pavilion
during Torontos Caravan celebrations.
A
member of the Canadian Ethnic Journalists and Writers
Club since its founding 19 years ago, Zlamal received an award
of distinction from the club in 1993. Though in failing health in
recent years he remained
a loving husband, a loving father, a true artist deeply involved
in ethnic journalism; in fact he attended a club meeting with his
wife on April 3rd only a few days before passing. Industry Minister
Art Eggleton testified to a mind still alert and questioning in
the true spirit of journalism.
Milo,
Captain Milo, Miloslav will be missed by many of his friends for
his unconditional love, love of art, and his rendition of O
